Unjobbing

In my opinion, working should be joyful (as much as possible), and we shouldn’t wait until retirement to follow our dreams.

We don’t “unjob” as much as we used to, however, we do take a different approach to career and money than most. Our philosophy is simple: do what you love, and the rest will follow. None of the three of us is cut out for the 9-5 world. For me, it’s that I can’t take that level of routine. For our partner Justan, it’s that his passion is film, which doesn’t fit that mold (his is more the 5 am – 10 pm, 7 days a week for two months followed by no work for a month world). And for our partner Andi, it’s similar to the boredom and claustrophobia I feel when trapped in that schedule. She dreams of becoming a midwife someday soon.

I’ve done catering, nannying, bank tellering, legal librarian-ing, landscaping, art modelling, professional writing (my actual vocation), store ownership, marketing and sales – all of these cobbled together at different points have constituted my work life. I also volunteer a lot. When I grow up I’d like to have some books published.
